The cost of everything in general is cheaper in the Philippines. But on the other hand, there are some cities and areas that you DO NOT want to live in.

Roughly, the cost of living in P.I. is about half of what it is in the U.S.. Before Marcos was kicked out, it was a lot cheaper, about 5 to 15 cent to the u.s. dollar. But after he was removed, the military bases were removed. That took away a lot from their economy, so to make up, they increased the prices. Now it's some where like, depending what you buy, 35 cents - 50 cents to the U.S. dollar. Anyway, yes, you can live more easily on your retirement there than in the U.S. Depending what part of P.I. you live, in some parts it's still way cheaper to live. A maid can still be as low as about $50 a month. All of the various answers may have been correct. Depends which part and when they're talking about. It's enjoyable living there.

Just be careful where you choose to live. Yes, everything is cheaper there.

Very easy, there are yahoo groups that you can get that info from, one is http://asia.groups.yahoo.com/group/movingtothephilippines/ and you can talk to others that live here in the Philippines. Bill

I don't think there are any webpages out there that present a detailed cost of living index for the Philippines. As a general rule though, a family of four can get by on $1,000 a month in Metro Manila. Much less if you choose to live in the countryside. You may want to browse these pages for added insights. Take note though, that cost of living in Cebu City is significantly lower than in Manila, say by 20%? (Native cebuanos can give a better estimate): http://www.livinginthephilippines.com http://www.livecebu.com/livingcosts.htm http://livingincebu.com/cost.htm To monitor the prices of basic goods, refer to this site: http://www.business.gov.ph/ConsumerWelfare_PriceWatch.php Hope this helps.

Go to the yahoo group Living in the Philippines 3. There are dozens of expats there that actually live all over the Philippines and can give you the cost of housing etc. and answer specific questions. We also have monthly budgets from the diffreant areas posted in the files section. If you want to know the "real deal" go there and ask questions from people like me that have lived here for years. I can assure you unless you live in a high cost area like Manilla, Cebu, Baggio or Boracay your retirement is more than enough to take care of a family of 4. I actually live here and have 2 kids in college, a maid and driver. I make roughly the same amount of money as you do and it's my sole source of income. I live comfortably and so can you. Also check out www.livinginthephilippines.com

Rice gruel.

yeap. i think that's enough. canned goods and rice for breakfast fish and rice for lunch vegetables for dinner. or a mix of anything.and a side of fruits each day. in my computation, it would be somewhere between 12-13000 a month. if they use 3 kilos of rice per day, 3 canned goods, 1 kilo of fish and 2 bundles of vegetables. and about a kilo of fruits. it may not be enough so you can adjust it. but we know how hard it is nowadays.

one thousand united states dollars a month then you will live comfortabl. the minimum wage in metro manila will come to only 182 united states dollars a month.

House - Depends on where suburbs around P6000 or $120. A little bit more for a small space in cityland. We were charging P8000 for a 22 sq m bare room in Makati. $160. That was five years ago. May have upped a little. Food: Jollibee more or less P100 for champ value meal, or $2. McDonalds about the same for Big Mac or Quarter Pounder. Power: EXPENSIVE! Not sure about rate, but its one of the complaints. Our moderately furnished home is billed P4000 a month ($80). My friends with bigger households usually billed twice that. Internet broadband: PLDT I think charges under P1000 for 512 kbps. ($20) but I've heard complaints. Globe about same price for 382 kbps, but generally better feedback. Transport. Gasoline is now P37 per litter. ($.74) Get diesel now P32 per liter.($.64). Bus minimum fare: P10 aircon ($.20)

If you want to live in the Philippines and you want to live at reasonable rates then stay out of Manila or Cebu, The closer to those two cities you get, the higher the price of living.
4 :
It depends on how you want to live. I live quite well on about USD 4,000 a month - but I drive a new RAV 4, my apartment overlooks Manila Bay, and go out on my boat every weekend. I think 1,000 USD is cutting it very close, even in the province. Is the object to be frugal or enjoy life? Food is very reasonable, DSL connection is USD 50 / mo, electricity is expensive, and in some provinces very sporadic.
5 :
Comfortable one around US$500/mo Average around UD$250/mo
6 :
Depends where in the Philippines obviously. Manila area I would want at least $2,000 US a month. In Cebu $1,200 - $1,500 a month. In the provinces you can get by for $500.
7 :
Below average - house rent - 3000 food - 1000 power - 500 broadband - 999 transport - 1000 TOTAL - -------------------- P6,499 (130 US$) Average - house rent - 5000 food - 3000 power - 2000 broadband - 999 transport - 3000 TOTAL - -------------------- P13,999(280 US $) Above Average - house rent - 10000 food - 5000 power - 3000 broadband - 999 transport - 4000 TOTAL - -------------------- P 22,999 (460 US$)

Free, if you beg Expensive, if you live large
9 :
Cost of living in the Philippines is very cheap as compared to cost of living in North America. That's why Filipinos can afford to drink all day and all night and not worry about work. Would you do that in North America? No way, your landlord will lock your apartment and put your things in auction.
10 :
It depends on your lifestyle and which part of the country you choose to live. Previous answers showed a breakdown of expenses and that's quite accurate.
11 :
$1000 dollars is too much for a month in the philippines... but if u prefer to live in eastwood, katipunan or makati(elite) i think that's just enough.
