What is it like to live in the Philippines

What is it like to live in the Philippines?
What is it like for an American born Filipino to live in the Philippines? I have dual citizenship there but I do not know how to speak Tagalog (english only), and don't know the culture that much. I understand that it would take time to adjust but what is it like to live there if you're an American? Would it be hard to get a job?

why not see for yourself... its best to come visit the place and experience it first hand... then you decide...
2 :
I don't think its gonna be that hard when it comes to communicating with Filipinos. Since majority of the people speak English. About getting a job, I guess that is where you'll be having problem at it because a lot of unemployed people here. But if you have a good working experience and qualifications then maybe thats not gonna be a problem. You can try to visit for a while and see for yourself.
3 :
It shouldn't be a problem for you to look for a job, there's a lot of sprawling call centers here in the country who are looking for people who can communicate well especially in english
4 :
If it's not for the low income, it's a very great place to experience yourself. It's both crazy and holy. You will never run out of something to remember. It's really worth a try...for a change. Seriously, you should try it. You would easily get hired because of your ability to speak English---lol----they equate it with intelligence. If you're after good income, forget it :) but if you're after fun, adventures and just being happy, best bet. People are very friendly and funny. About the standard of living and how some government sectors operate, be ready to face some disappointments...some things are inconvenient but you would learn a lot. Lastly, you have to leave old life behind if you want to see what you're looking for!
5 :
As someone born in the Philippines, I say try it for yourself, and I'm sure you'll decide that it's a friendly environment with much to offer. Religiously, Oh hell yea! And, I miss the food so much! Lol, Go ahead and live there for God's Sakes!
6 :
Yes, it will be difficult to get a job. I am an American, married to a Filipina and from experience because of the many Fil/Am familieis I have associated with over a 28 year period, it is not easy to get a job in the Philippines. Some may suggest Call Centers. Perhaps there may be a chance for you to get employment. Just be warned it is not as easy as others may say. Also figure if you do get a job at a Call Center, your wages may be compareable to the locals wages. Think about this and your standard of living expenses. Most expats who work here in the Philippines are working for multi-national companies and were hired outside the Philippines that have transferred the Philippines operations You will receive many diversed opinions. Do yourself a favor and considered the source of your information. Many good people will respond because they sincerily want to help, but have limited experiences. Some times its also important to consider the asker culture too.
7 :
To imigane what it may be like do the following ... 1) turn off your electricity for a day or two ... 3) turn off your water heater permanently 3) get a hotel room in the slums for a couple of weeks
8 :
it really depends on where you live in the philippines, whether it be in the bario or in the city. the tagalog should come naturally but not necessarily quickly. there's always a place in the philippines needing workers.
9 :
Life in the Philippines is nice if you have the money. You can live in a nice area and have domestic help. Regarding the language, English is widely spoken so you will not have a problem....even street vendors speak english. About employment, it depends on your educational background, age, experience, type of job you are looking for and desired salary. If you are not an expat and will have local salary, it will not be high unless you have a managerial position. A lot of filipinos leave their country and their families to find work in other countries where they have better opportunities. but if you have a lot of expertise and have something special to offer, that improves your chances of getting a good paying job. The filipinos are very friendly people. I suggest you visit the country and stay for a while and see for yourself if you like it.
10 :
sometimes its really hard... The economy is still struggling to make this plae a little bit better...
11 :
I am an American born Filipino and I lived in the Phils. for 3 years. It was definitely a culture shock. When I went to the Phils. I didn't know how to speak tagalog, I could understand it though. Be prepared you will have a lot of instances where they are making fun of you (because you can't speak the language, or you try to speak the language or just the way you pronounce things) they will be making fun of you right in front of your face assuming that you can't understand them. I spoke tagalog fluently towards the end of my stay there. I don't use it as often now though. I tried looking for a job there as well. It was very difficult. I ended up finding a job where I was just tutoring people (on how to use various computer applications). I think the one of the problems I had was that although English is considered the second language, employers still want someone to speak english and tagalog fluently to cater to everyone. A lot of the jobs that I applied for weren't paying as much as I would expect. I remember going to SM once and speaking with one of the cashiers and she said she graduated nursing and I asked why she was still working at SM and she said that with the thousands of people graduating every year, a lot of people in the philippines can't find jobs in their fields because they fill up fast. So finding a job in my opinion will be difficult unless you "know someone". The time I spent in the Phils. taught me a lot. If I had to do it all over again, I would. That experience brought me down to earth and keeps me grounded. Good luck. I've made a lot of great friends that I meet up with over here. There were a lot of great memories.
12 :
Well i'm still under age, but all the times i've been in the philippines it was a little hard at first because I only speak English and not Tagalog, so it was a little hard to communicate but not really. Most of them learn English in school so they can talk to you and basically help you out. The culture is basically the same, but i guess it depends on how you grew up.
13 :
Its a shame that your folks haven't atleast taught you more about your heritage. But I commend you for the effort your displaying now. Ok your right about having to adjust. America and the Pines are very different. Though there are cars,tv and Mc Donalds there as I'm sure you know. The culture, the people and the way of life is different. If I could start anywhere Filipinos aren't as selfish compared to americans. I'm sure you'll take offence but its the truth. Filipino's are much more family orientated and will sacrifice alot for the sake of their families. Filipino people think that America is the land of milk and honey and that people who come from there are automatically wealthy. Thats not the case as I'm sure you know but thats what they think. Don't ask me why but its just the way it is. Now since your American you will automatically be treated differently and people will be very friendly to you but from my experience they will to a degree try to get something out of you. Be it money, friendship or other things. You have to understand that the Pines isn't a first world nation. Many parts are quiet poor but also many parts are also quiet well established. Jobs there don't pay much at all. For example working in an office for 10 hours a day will only get you about lets say less than 30 US dollars. I could almost guarantee that you would not be able to find a job there since you at the very least don't speak the language and have little knowledge of filipino ways. I do however suggest that you should visit the country and see for yourself what the place is like. I'm sure that you will find it very interesting and will have a good time. Some of the best times of my life so far have happened while I've been there. I hope the same fortune finds you aswell. Hope that helped.

Should I still stay in America or go and live in the Philippines

Should I still stay in America or go and live in the Philippines?
As a filipino, I was born and raised in America. I'm planning to live in the Philippines after I'm done with college cause it's more simple there than here. I don't need a paragraph. I just want some your opinions.

and by that you mean you can get laid easier here with finer broads?
2 :
Hey if you are willing to come here after college in the U.S. and work for 200-300pesos for a 12 hour day, (that is less than 6dollars aday) then go for it....
3 :
Since you like Philippines more than USA then choose Philippines.
4 :
Yes do it,because the Philippines is where home is,our family, and the greatness and warmth it truly is a happy place, (well for us filipinos) But first you must find a job, descent one.. you cant always have it easy
5 :
Out of the frying pan into the fire, huh?
6 :
I think that's a decision for you to think and not from random users on the internet, I would however suggest you to visit Philippines and If you like what you are seeing then it's up to you if you will stay or not.
7 :
Usually somebody born and raise here in the United States will refer to it as U.S. and not America. I was born in the Philippines and grew up here in the U.S. the majority of my life. That said; your in for a rude awakening if you really grew up here and then decide to relocate in the Philippines after college. There is so much convenience that you take for granted here that you do not have in the Philippines. Why do you think most Filipinos want to leave the Philippines rather than stay? It is basically a lack of decent jobs to get if you are not related to the right family. Try getting involve with Non Government Organizations like the Peace Corps and have yourself assigned to the Philippines. Or have yourself recruited by one of the larger corporations that has company branches located in the Phil. Their might be even federal jobs that is available here for you that can get you in the Philippines. Unless your family is very well off and can support you to live the Philippines; it would be your best interest to secure a means to live comfortably in the Philippines prior to making that final commitment to reside overseas. Some of the reason why some Filipinos are living a simple and comfortable lifestyle is that they have a loving relative abroad who is supporting them.
8 :
why would you go to the philippines for an education when those who are in the philippines come to America to go to college? If you get a degree in America it is more likely to be accredited globally than if it was a degree earned in the Philippines. Not saying all universities are like that, but it is likely to happen. I was contemplating going to the Philippines for my college education too because of cost, but then I realized my means of transportation would be difficult, I would have to rent a condo in Manila, and on top of all of that tuition might cost me a bit. I chose to stay in America because 1) I get grants that cover all my tuition expenses 2) your way of transportation is more dependable 3) I can understand Tagalog but am not a totally fluent speaker 4) this country has great opportunity and fantastic professors. So I say, stay in the US.
9 :
Why ask such a personal question? We aren't you. If it was me I'd save enough in the States to pay for college and a house in Philippines before moving out. Been to Philippines-I'd live in the province
10 :
Work for 6 months in America, save $5,000, then live in the Pines for 6 months work free. Unless you cant get a job through e-commerce forget it. Im white, but have been In PI for 4 months not working. Even teaching english here does not pay well. The cost of living is cheap so why work and deal with stress. But, if you are a dual citizen you are eligible to work at the US embassy although competitino is fierce, I would but Im not filipino at all. Also, the embassy pays at the same government rate as it does stateside. SO a entry level job pay at least $30,000 annually. Basically you'd be ballin' out.
11 :
The USA is the greatest country in the world despite all of the hardships there now. It is only worth going to the Philippines if you have alot of money or you have a decent retirement paycheck. Even then it is really not worth it. It is just insane to go and live there under any other circumstances.
12 :
If you are independantly wealthy, able to retire in your early 20's, then go for the Philippines early retirementt. If you have to work to earn money to support yourself, you must stay in the USA, because you can not earn enough money in the Philippines, and you are a spoiled american that can not live on one tenth the wages you will earn in the Philippines. The best choice for you would be to have some type of career where you get lots of time off, like a seasonal tourism at summer beach resorts or winter ski resorts, or school teacher, and then earn and save lots of money in the USA, and take long vacations to the Philippines, and have a great time. If you are very successful, and earn lots of money, you can take more frequent, shorter trips, ... lots of very smart and lucky american guys do this. Another great career would be with the airlines, because you get to fly free, have flexible schedules with long periods off work, making frequent trips easy to do and affordable.
13 :
"Simple" is such a vague term. Which aspect(s) of life in the Philippines makes it more simple than life in the US? Generally, I'd say that your decision should be based more on what you plan to do after college as opposed to what seems "easier" right now. Certain opportunities are more prevalent in the US and the difference in the quality of life and cost of living is enormous (depending on which areas we're comparing). Also, if you've lived in America your whole life, I don't see how dropping everything to move halfway around the world could possibly be a "simple" thing to do.
14 :
finish college first, and then ask that question again. who ever told you that living here in the Philippines is simpler than living wherever in America you're from is a big, fat, liar.
15 :
It's a lot simpler to get a job in America. Secure employment before coming.
16 :
You are correct it is "more simple" there in many levels and in many ways. But it might not be the same things you are referring to. But before you go and live there, go visit there during your summer break or winter or sem break, to get a feel first. And try to go not just once and stay longer 2, 3 or 4 weeks at a time. And you did not even mention which part of the Philippines you are planning to stay, what you are taking up in college and if you have family and/or friends there or if you wouldn't need to start to find work or be employed right away to support yourself. There are just so many things to ask yourself before you commit, so go finish school and then go visit over there once in a while during your breaks and then decide later on.
17 :
My friend since you was born (& raised in the US) you are an American not a Filipino! Maybe a Filipino-American but not a Filipino. I suggest that you stay there until you retired & then come here to live that way you will get the best of 2 worlds.
18 :
Yes you should. I agree with 'dark cheetah', "because the Philippines is where home is,our family, and the greatness and warmth it truly is a happy place, (well for us filipinos)" I agree with you too, that its more simple here than there. So do what you want and what will make you happy, just find a decent job and you'll have an awesome life.
19 :
Some lesson in life I learned, you can live a simple life wherever you may be.
20 :
go to mexico, it's pretty much like the philippines. and if you want to return to america, you just gotta cross the border
21 :
So you are still young then if you are just graduating from college. You're right, life is more simple here, I am an American living in the Philippines. You were born and raised in America, so have you ever been to the Philippines? Do you still have relatives there? Just because you have a college degree, doesn't guarantee much in the Philippines. There are plenty of college grads driving jeepneys and tricycle for a living. If you have a good job set up or a steady income, then I say, move to the Philippines, it'd be worth it. If you don't have those things, stay in America until you do. But either way, visit the Philippines before you make a final decision. Please check out my blog to see some sites and see how someone that is use to the US is adjusting to the Philippines. http://texaninthephilippines.com

there is no such things just use nice open ports and you will be fine and you need comcast do you have it or not
2 :
If I were on the southern region of the United States, say Florida or Georgia, you will be 12 hours ahead of me (Eastern Standard time -12hours). But really, this not a determinant as to when there will be a lot seeders. It entirely depends on the file or torrent that you are downloading (popularity). You are practically downloading from seeders around the world and not just the United States. Just try to choose a torrent that has a high seeder to leecher ratio. And you may also need to open ports to fully your torrent program to effectively communicate with other peers around the world.

Tell me how many ( I hope it is not your whole clan), and I can help you through my friends in GMA7. You can email me.

Why don't you call GMA7 to find out?
4 :
You can watch SOP live every Sunday you must wake up early and go to "Kamuning Street" (GMA Network Station) by Bus or MRT... then at the kamuning street there's a crowd of people that fall in line... you must fall in line (the early you get to fall in line the more chance you can watch live) but you must wait until 11:30am before the guard allow to enter its count... or you can watch SOP live without fall in line you must have some relative that working on GMA Network Station... your relatives will list your name and your 4 comrade at the guard house (GMA Security Guard House) before the day of the show SOP... then at the day of the show you must come early bring you and your comrade I.D. (school, driver license etc) and show it to the security guard to see and prove if your name is on the list that your relatives has written... after the procedure you will now enter early at the studio 3 were SOP was shooting you will see those celebrity practicing early for event you can take a picture those celebrity after they practice... note: only your relatives who works in GMA can list up to 5 person including you.
